The students “turned up” Saint Pius from February 6-10, 2017 as they got prepared for the Sweetheart Dance,  which was held on  Saturday, February 11th. The theme STUCO chose was “St Pius turns up this year”. The idea was in a tight vote between Harry Potter week and various other Valentine’s Day themes.

Sophomores Hope Simone and Katelyn Garcia get into the spirit of Sweetheart week. They dressed up to match each other for squad-up day.

“It was a close vote. There were many great ideas, but I guess at the end of the day, St Pius X just really wanted to turn it up,” said STUCO Advisor Elaina Smith.

Senior Grace Gengler, a student at St. Pius and a member of STUCO and Pep Club, came up with the idea. She had to compose a five-day plan for each dress up day and then pitch it to the club where it’s left to a vote.

Seniors Meredith Wilson, Josie Guadagnano and Grace Vaughn dress up in their jerseys for their last sweetheart week. “Dressing up for our last Sweetheart week got everyone really excited for the dance on Saturday,” says Guadagnano.

“This year Pep Club has been trying to turn the spirits of the Warriors up throughout school, so what better theme than Pius turns up the spirit,” said Gengler.

Gengler proposed five dress up days during the week of Sweetheart.  Monday: Pius turns it up with mix-up day; Tuesday: was flag up where students repped their country or heritage with the colors of that flag; Wednesday: was ball-up day, where the student body  either showed their hometown pride or wore jerseys. Thursday: friends group together and match on squad up day.  Friday: students showed respect to God and dressed in uniform for Mass. All were supposed to show a “turned up” theme.

“The dress up days were easy enough, so everyone could get into it and participate together,” said Gengler.

The week was filled with crazy outfits and jerseys to match the theme of the day. St Pius truly did “turn it up” with their creativeness and enthusiasm.

“My favorite day was ball up day, because I got to see all the bandwagon Chicago Cub fans,” said  Junior Rocco Monachino
